Brunello di Montalcino, Villa le Prata 2012 Decanter
Mahogany garnet hue. Slightly candied red cherry aromas that are big and luscious. This is a broad- shouldered red, with lots of pure fruit. A forward style of Brunello that will have many fans.
The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a classic interpretation of Sangiovese. The wine displays a dark crimson color with subtle ruby highlights. Dried berry, tobacco, pressed flower and pencil shavings are some of the principal components of the bouquet. You feel a pinch of tannic firmness and fresh acidity on the close. Villa le Prata makes 12,500 of this attractive base Brunello.
The Villa le Prata 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is a smooth and steady red wine that emits clean pulses of dried cherry, wild berry, dark spice and savory tobacco. The wine does a good job of underlining those aromas that are so trou to Sangiovese. That sense of purity and generosity continues to the palate where the wine shows silky tannins and balanced acidity.
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino shows smooth lines and a curvaceous figure. Soft aromas of cherry, Spanish cedar, licorice, dried rosemary and roasted almond rise from the bouquet. I tried this wine during two phases, once shortly after the bottle was opened and second time 24 hours later. The evolution and softening of the wine was remarkable and is very encouraging in terms of its potential longevity. Yet, you never lose sight of that characteristic Sangiovese tartness and freshness. Drink this elegant Brunello after 2017.
The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Massimo is a tight and polished red wine that offers both power and enduring sense of length. The wine opens to bright fruit tones with dark cherry and dried blueberry followed by spice, tilled earth and leather. Those savory aromas at the back help to give support and density. Villa le Prata has created a Sangiovese with impressive textural fiber that should help carry it forward over the next decade.
A fresh and firm Brunello with black berry, dark choccolate and bark aromas and flavors. Medium body. Fine tannins and a clean and vivid finish.
Blackberry and dark choccolate undertones. Better after 2023
Nicely balanced Brunello with aromas and flavors of red berries, plums, flowers and hints of fresh herbs and bitter spices. Full-bodiedwith a well integrated tannin structure and a lightly firm finish. Remains fresh throughout. Needs time to expand. Drink after 2022.
A firm and linear red with cherry, black berry, cedar and sandalwood. It's full and integrated with length and focus. Lovely clarity. Give it another two or three years to open and come together
Wonderful aromas of dried strawberries, cedar, almonds and flowers follow through to a full body, yet it’s refined and poised with beautiful, reserved fruit and structure. Drink or hold.
Smokey aromas highlight the cherry and dried-strawberry
character. Medium body, integrated tannins and a fresh
finish. Polished and crafted. Drink now or hold.
The raspberry and cherry aromas are very intense and pretty. Full body, silky and fine tannins. Juicy fruit. I love the finish. Delicious now but better in 2019.
Rich, spicy fruit character that's still fresh, following through to a full, round palate with lots of sweet fruit and well integrated tannins. Nice to drink now, or hold.
Rather brash and spicy oak aromas sit fresh over ripe dark cherries and orange peel. On the palate, there are very fluid, smooth and supple tannins in a velvety style. Has lengh and plushness. A really terrific wine. Try from 2020
I love the balance and fruit to this. The medium to full palate and dried-fruit and honey character follow through to a fine tannin backbone and freshness on the finish. This Brunello producer is on a roll. Drink or hold
A soft and silky red with lots of chocolate, light coffee, dried fruit and plum character. Mushrooms, too. Full-bodied yet linear and racy. Very fine texture. Classy finish giving it drinkability with such fine tannins. Drink now or hold.
Incredible aromatics here with smoked meat, toffee, light prune, dried cherry and dried flower. Full body, soft, velvety tannins and a long, sexy finish. Wonderful depth and intensity. Big wine from a little producer. Try in 2017.
A full, rich Brunello with dried-strawberry, plum and lemon-rind character. Velvety and juicy. Drink now.
This wine opens with aromas of woodland berries, forest floor and spice with hints of menthol. The ripe, low-acid palate delivers fleshy black cherry accented with thyme, sage and a hint of licorice alongside tight tannins.
Lead pencil and mineral dryness upfront followed by dark fruit, blackberry and rum cake. The wine presents a soft round mouthfeel, with ample structure and length. Lingering barbecue and ripe fruit mark the close.
Brunello di Montalcino Massimo 2006 Selezione Massimo is a dense and concentrated Brunello that delivers dark fruit, espresso, cola, blackberry and licorice. It's a beautiful interpretation of the Montalcino territory executed with a bold, modern flair. Oak tones characterize the wine.
Elegantly wrought, offering strawberry, cherry, anice and tobacco flavors. The firm, slightly dry tannins cleanse the palate. Ideal with tomato or meat souces. Drink now through 2023.
Broad and rangy, with cherry, licorice, leather and spice aromas and flavors. Shows grip and lively acidity, picking up balsamic accents as the long finish unfolds. A powerful style. Best from 2016 through 2029.
Licorice, leather, sweet cherry and plum flavors inform this effusive red. Open at first, with refined yet tightfisted tannins emerging on the finish. Shows fine length and potential. Best from 2015 through 2027.
Full of floral, raspberry, cherry and tobacco aromas and flavors, this red also shows savory and mineral elements. Sinewy and taut, offering a silky texture and firm tannins. This shows fine length, with a sweetness that lingers. Best from 2013 through 2025.
The Brunello 2016 Riserva Massimo makes itself known with a display of peppery herbs, crushed stone and undergrowth that gives way to wild strawberries and smoke. This is polished and soothing to the senses, offering sweet spices and dark red fruits. Saline-mineral tension and fine tannins collect toward the close, creating a more grippy feel, as the 2016 Riserva finishes structured and chewy with notes of licorice and inner rose, This is aromatically very pretty today, but a few years of cellaring will be required to help soften its structural clout.Drinking 2024-2030
2015 Villa Le Prata Brunello di Montalcino Vividred with a garnet rim. Open, forward nose of red cherry, faded flowers and sweet spices. Enters fresh, then slightly folded on itself in the middle, such that the acidity and tannins stand out more on the long graceful finish. The fruit fleshes out while you age it a few more years in a good cellar. -- Ian D'Agata
Bright red. Perfumed juicy aromas and flavors of redcurrant, minerals and sweet spices. Long, lively and clean; not a blockbuster but easygoing and bursting at the seams with fruity charm. Maybe more like a really good Rosso than a Brunello, but truly lovely and fun to try. Drink this up quickly for a Maximum enjoiment; will make a lovely "wine by the glass" number in restaurant.
Increasing floral personality with aeration. Supple and sweet, but displaying very good lift and noteworthy finesse to the fruit-driven flavors of spicy red currant and raspberry. Offers lovely purity and intense aromatics, not to mention a light touch, on the long, juicy finish. Lovely Brunello

Ian D'Agata Mr 2017
Dense and smooth but tightly wound, with a lightly minty quality to the reticent red currant and savory herb flavors. Nicely delineated, refined Brunello with an austere, elegant mouthfeel that is less fruity but more refined than other 2012 Brunellos. Finished with outstanding length, youthfully dusty tannins and noteworthy deph. I’d cellar this for another three-four years before pulling the cork on it. Drink 2021-2030
Bright ruby-red. Musky aromas of red currant, raspberry and licorice, complicated by hints of smoked meat and mocha. Rich, full and broad, but harmonious acidity nicely frames the concentrated flavors of balckberry, licorice and dark chocolate. Finishes with ripe, mouth-coating tannins and noteworthy persistence. A very good showing for this Brunello Riserva.
Drinking window: 2024-2035
the Brunello dedicated to the father of the current owners, a solid Riserva dense with dark charatteristics, starting from the nose, with notes of black raspberry, officinal pepper leaf, tuoches of undergrowth and rhubarb. Mouth with sapid tannins, finish with return of undergrowth nuances.
